How does the tile calculator work?

Area calculation

The calculator computes the floor area (length x width) and wall area (perimeter x height), accounting for doors and windows (15% automatically deducted). Your selected waste percentage is added to the total area.

Piece count calculation

The area of a single tile is calculated from its dimensions. The required number is obtained by dividing the total area (incl. waste) by the area of one tile. Box count is calculated similarly using the box m² amount.

Installation pricing

Installation cost is based on per-m² rates that differ between floor and wall tiling. Wall tiling is generally more expensive due to technical complexity. Prep work (demolition, leveling, waterproofing) is priced separately.

Why is waste percentage important?

Tiles need to be cut for corners, edges, and around pipes. Some tiles may break during installation. The waste percentage ensures sufficient material. 5–10% is enough for regular rectangular rooms; more complex spaces may need 15–20%.

What determines the cost of bathroom or floor tiling?

Labor

Professional tiler's work is the single largest cost. The price depends on the scope, tile size, and installation patterns.

  • Floor tiling: 40–70 €/m²
  • Wall tiling: 45–80 €/m²
  • Complex patterns increase the price

Materials

Tile prices vary significantly by quality and style (5–150 €/m²). Additionally, adhesive, grout, primer, and possibly waterproofing are needed. Material costs typically make up 30–50% of the total price.

Prep work

Before tiling, surfaces must be carefully prepared:

  • Old tile removal: 20–45 €/m²
  • Surface leveling: 15–35 €/m²
  • Waterproofing (bathroom): 25–40 €/m²

Location

Prices in the capital region are slightly higher than elsewhere in Finland. Helsinki and Espoo +5% compared to average.

Common tiling budget mistakes

Too small waste allowance

Many use only 5% waste allowance, but in reality cuts, corners, and pipes cause more waste. In bathrooms, 10–15% is a safer choice, and buying from the same batch later may be impossible.

Forgetting waterproofing

Waterproofing is mandatory in wet rooms and costs 25–40 €/m². This is often overlooked in budgets, even though it's a critical part of bathroom renovation. Without waterproofing, moisture damage can ruin the entire renovation.

Underestimating substrate condition

Under old tiles there may be uneven surfaces or moisture damage. Demolition and substrate repair can easily add 30–50 €/m² in costs. Reserve budget for unexpected substrate repairs.

Only material prices considered

Tile price is only part of the total cost. Labor cost is usually 2–3 times the tile price, plus adhesive, grout, and primer. Total cost is often 3–4 times the tile budget alone.

Underestimating wall tiling cost

Wall tiling is technically more demanding than floor tiling and costs 10–15% more. In bathrooms, wall area is often 4–5 times the floor area, so wall tiling forms the majority of the total price.
