The air source heat pump is Finland’s most popular supplementary heating solution — and for good reason. When correctly chosen and installed, it significantly reduces heating costs, improves living comfort, and provides cooling during summer heatwaves. On this page, we cover everything essential about choosing, installing, pricing, and maintaining an air source heat pump.
An air source heat pump harnesses thermal energy from the outdoor air. The outdoor unit extracts heat from the outside air — even in freezing temperatures — and transfers it to the indoor unit, which blows warm air into the room. In summer, the process can be reversed: the heat pump acts as an air conditioner and efficiently cools the interior. A modern air source heat pump is quiet and energy-efficient. At best, one kilowatt of electricity produces 3–5 kilowatts of heat.
The total price of an air source heat pump consists of the unit cost and the installation work. A typical air source heat pump installation costs €1,800–€4,500 depending on the unit’s output, energy rating, and installation complexity.
Kevyt Remppa delivers air source heat pump installation as a turnkey service. A typical project proceeds as follows:
An air source heat pump can reduce your heating bill by 20–40 per cent depending on the property, current heating method, and usage habits. In an electrically heated detached house, the savings can amount to several hundred euros per year. When used alongside oil heating, a heat pump significantly reduces oil consumption. The typical payback period is 3–6 years. In addition, a heat pump increases your home’s value and improves living comfort all year round. Read more: Air source heat pump electricity consumption and savings — how much does it really use?
An air source heat pump heats indoor air directly by blowing. An air-to-water heat pump (ASHP-W), on the other hand, heats a hydronic heating system such as radiators or underfloor heating. If you already have hydronic heating, an air-to-water heat pump may be the better option. If you want an affordable supplementary heating solution quickly, an air source heat pump is often the best choice. We help you compare the options based on your property.
An air source heat pump requires regular maintenance to operate efficiently. The filters should be cleaned every few months, and a professional service is recommended at least once a year. Regular maintenance extends the unit’s lifespan, keeps the efficiency ratio high, and ensures clean indoor air. Read more about heat pump maintenance.

The installation work for an air source heat pump qualifies for the Finnish household tax deduction (kotitalousvähennys). In 2026, the deduction is 35% of the labour cost (work purchased from a company). The maximum deduction is €1,600 per person per year, with a €150 excess. For a couple, the combined maximum deduction is therefore €3,200. Kevyt Remppa itemises the labour and material costs in the quote so you can easily claim the tax deduction. If an air source heat pump is not suitable for your property, we can also help with other heat pump types. An air-to-water heat pump is suited to hydronic heating systems, while ground source heating offers the lowest running costs over the long term. For all options, correct sizing and professional installation are key.
