Steel and timber stud walls - a durable frame

We build steel and timber stud-framed walls. A stable and durable structure for all kinds of spaces.

  • Steel and timber stud structures
  • Dimensionally accurate and durable frame
  • Insulation and boarding
  • Surface-ready finishing

Who are steel and timber stud walls for?

Steel and timber stud walls are ideal when you need a durable and dimensionally accurate frame for partition walls or lightweight load-bearing structures. They are used in both home layout changes and office and commercial spaces where wall straightness and rigidity are important. A well-designed frame also facilitates later installations such as doors, cabinets, and shelving.

Layout changes

When the floor plan of a home is being modified, stud-framed partition walls are needed to create new rooms.

Office and commercial spaces

Partition walls for offices and commercial premises where straightness and rigidity are required.

Wet rooms

Steel studs are excellently suited for wet rooms thanks to their moisture resistance.

Sound insulation

When good sound insulation between rooms is needed, stud framing enables effective insulation.

Steel and timber stud wall pricing

  • Material choice: A steel frame is more expensive than timber, but thanks to its dimensional stability and rigidity it is an excellent choice for demanding projects. Timber studs are an affordable and versatile solution that is perfectly adequate for most apartment partition walls.
  • Wall size: The longer and taller the wall, the more framing material, boarding, insulation, and labour are needed. For small walls, the cost often comes more from labour time and call-out charges, while for larger projects material costs become more significant.
  • Load-bearing requirements: Non-load-bearing partition walls are more affordable than walls that are subject to loading or to which heavy structures are attached. If the wall needs to support sliding doors, cabinets, or other structures, reinforcements are added to the frame.
  • Insulation and boarding: Sound insulation, fire rating, and other technical requirements affect how much insulation and how many layers of boarding are installed on the wall. The more demanding the structure, the more labour and materials are needed.

Steel and timber stud walls in the Helsinki metropolitan area

Steel and timber stud walls are the most common way to construct lightweight partition walls in apartments, offices, and commercial premises. A stud-framed wall consists of vertical and horizontal studs, between which insulation is installed and onto which boarding is fixed — typically plasterboard or fibreboard. Steel studs are dimensionally stable, moisture-resistant, and particularly rigid, making them excellently suited for demanding projects such as wet rooms and long wall runs. Timber studs are a traditional and versatile alternative that is more affordable and easier to work with on site. Kevyt Remppa builds stud-framed partition walls with expertise across the Helsinki metropolitan area — we have over 20 years of experience with various floor plan solutions in apartment blocks, terraced houses, and detached houses. We design every wall according to the site requirements, taking into account load-bearing capacity, sound insulation, fire safety, and future surface treatments.

Practical differences between steel and timber studs

A steel stud is a thin galvanised steel profile that does not sag, warp, or crack over time. It is an excellent choice for spaces where moisture variations are significant, such as structures adjacent to shower rooms and saunas. Steel studs also enable a thinner wall structure than timber studs, which is important in small spaces. Timber studs, on the other hand, are the most affordable option and are perfectly adequate for most partition walls in dry areas. Cabinets, shelves, and other structures can easily be fixed directly to timber studs with screws. Sound insulation can be installed in both stud options, and when properly executed, both steel and timber stud walls meet the building regulation requirements for partition walls.

Our service area in Helsinki, Espoo, and Vantaa

We build steel and timber stud walls across the entire Helsinki metropolitan area. The service is a natural part of broader partition wall and structural renovations, where the floor plan of a home is being changed, new rooms are being built, or sound insulation is being improved. We are familiar with the structures of different building types from various eras and can select the best stud solution for each project. We always start with a free survey visit and provide a fixed-price quote.

Stud structures as part of layout changes and space division

Stud-framed partition walls are often needed when a home's floor plan is being changed — for example, dividing a large room into two bedrooms, building a separate study, or creating a walk-in wardrobe. Stud construction integrates seamlessly with plasterboard wall finishing and, where needed, improvement of sound insulation. During the planning phase, we also take into account electrical wiring, water pipes, and ventilation duct penetrations, so that no changes to the wall structure are needed afterwards. The end result is a straight, strong, and surface-ready wall that lasts for decades.
